Mantras and Brain Hacks

In the Military there is a certain amount of conditioning or brain wash, if you will. Not that that is bad thing. Many people want to be condition to become more fit or trained to think more systematically.  So ignore all the negative connotations that may be associated with the two terms.

The key to good communication is understanding.

In the military there are a few different chants that are repeated.  In WW1 the men in the trenches would say, “we’re here because we’re here because were here because we’re here”.  This particular chant actually won’t do you any good. Sorry.

The purpose of these chants is to familiarize yourself with whatever discomfort may be coming near you.  Now you probably aren’t in the military, so you probably will not need a mantra as “uplifting” as the army men do.

Here are some mantras that should help benefit and motivate your life.

  • If it is to be, it is up to me.
  • You can do it.
  • Push it.
  • I can do this. If not me, who will?

Yes, it may seem silly to say these things to yourself while running or doing weight lifting, but it is actually very effective way to keep yourself motivated.  Now it certainly helps when you have a platoon sergeant screaming in your ear, but we civilians can learn to work without that.

You see to exercise effectively you not only need more than physical strength, you need mental strength.  This is the strength that that is going to keep you moving even when your body already feels exhausted.   It is scientifically proven that repeating funny little motivational mantras to ourselves actually helps to build connections in the brain that keep us motivated and positive.

It is actually how advertisements get you to buy specific products.  You see a commercial and unconsciously you draw a connection to the product and the information received.  Later, when you are in the store you are prompted to buy something because of the information integrated into the brain through the commercial. Sounds spooky, this is not a conspiracy website.  That is actually a fact.  Big business pays thousands of dollars to advertise agencies to find the most effective commercials.

Anyway, the point is you can condition yourself to think a specific way.  Instead of saying “it is too hard”, “I can’t do it” or worst of all “I’ll do it later” start telling yourself you can.
